Proklos' Kommentar zum ersten Buch von Euklids „Elementen“: zugleich eine Philosophie der Mathematik und die Hauptquelle, die wir zur Geschichte der griechischen Geometrie haben.

Kontext und Geschichte

Proklos schrieb ihn im 5. Jahrhundert, achthundert Jahre nach Euklid, und sein Wert ist zwiefach. Als Philosophie vertritt er eine noch immer umstrittene Stellung: die mathematischen Gegenstände sind weder Dinge der Welt noch Übereinkünfte, sondern bestehen in der Einbildungskraft als Entwurf von Gründen, welche die Seele bereits besitzt. Als Zeugnis enthält er den „Geometerkatalog“, eine Übersicht über die Geschichte der Geometrie vor Euklid, die aus einem verlorenen Werk des Eudemos stammt, und das ist beinahe alles, was wir über die Anfänge der griechischen Mathematik wissen. Ohne diese Seiten wären Thales und Pythagoras als Mathematiker noch dunkler, als sie es sind. Die Übersetzung stammt von Thomas Taylor, 1788.
