Kontext und Geschichte
Diese englische Übersetzung verteilt auf drei Bände, was im Deutschen zwei sind: das Buch von 1818 und den Ergänzungsband, den Schopenhauer 1844 hinzufügte, sechsundzwanzig Jahre später. Die Ergänzungen sind keine Anhängsel: Sie sind so lang wie das ursprüngliche Werk, und seine Gedanken liest man dort oft besser, weil er nun schreibt, ohne noch jemanden vom Aufbau überzeugen zu müssen. Er selbst verlangte, das Ganze zweimal zu lesen.
