Kontext und Geschichte
Es sei gleich gesagt, dass es keine Geschichtsschreibung ist. Xenophon nimmt eine wirkliche Gestalt — den Begründer des Perserreichs — und erfindet ihr Leben, um darzulegen, was ein Herrscher sein sollte: wie man das Befehlen lehrt, wie man Treue gewinnt, statt sie zu erzwingen, wie ein Heer geordnet wird, wie man einen besiegten Feind behandelt. Herodot erzählt von einem völlig anderen Kyros. Das Buch wurde im Altertum und in der Renaissance viel gelesen: Scipio und Caesar führten es mit sich, Machiavelli führt es an, und Jefferson besaß zwei Exemplare. Man liest es mit Gewinn im Wissen, dass darin Xenophons Vorstellung von recht ausgeübter Macht steht, nicht das, was in Persien geschah.

It seems that Dakyns died before Cyropaedia could be included as the planned fourth and final volume of his series, "The Works of Xenophon," published in the 1890s by Macmillan and Co. The works in that series can all be found in Project Gutenberg under their individual titles.
