Contexto e historia
Tocqueville viajó a Estados Unidos en 1831 con el encargo oficial de estudiar sus prisiones, y el libro que salió de ahí era otra cosa. Este primer volumen, de 1835, es descriptivo y optimista; el segundo, de 1840, es mucho más abstracto y mucho más oscuro, y es donde aparece el famoso «despotismo blando» de una sociedad de iguales que se entrega a un poder tutelar. Conviene no confundirlos ni citarlos como si fueran el mismo libro escrito a la vez.
