Plutarco empareja un griego con un romano —Alejandro y César, Demóstenes y Cicerón— y los compara al final de cada pareja. No escribe historia sino **carácter**: dice abiertamente que una anécdota pequeña revela mejor al hombre que una batalla. De aquí sale la mitad de las obras romanas de Shakespeare, y buena parte de lo que Occidente cree saber de la Antigüedad.
