Contexto e historia
Plutarco las escribió a principios del siglo II y advierte que no hace historia sino vidas: sostiene que un gesto pequeño o una frase revelan el carácter mejor que una batalla con miles de muertos. A través de la traducción inglesa de North llegaron a Shakespeare, que sacó de ellas el Julio César, el Coriolano y el Antonio y Cleopatra casi escena por escena.
