Contesto e storia
La definizione del libro secondo — l'anima è l'atto primo di un corpo naturale che ha la vita in potenza — scioglie d'un colpo il problema platonico di come si congiungano due sostanze diverse: non si congiungono, perché non sono due, così come la forma di una scure non è cosa separata dal ferro. Di qui una scala: le piante si nutrono e si riproducono, gli animali inoltre sentono e si muovono, l'uomo inoltre pensa. Il libro terzo contiene il passo sull'intelletto agente che occupò millecinquecento anni di commenti, perché Aristotele vi dice che quella parte è «separabile, impassibile e non mescolata» e non chiarisce se sia personale o comune: Averroè lesse in un modo e Tommaso in un altro, e la contesa arrivò fino al Rinascimento. È anche il primo trattato di psicologia e di teoria della percezione che ci sia rimasto.
