Contesto e storia
Pascal morì nel 1662 a trentanove anni lasciando centinaia di frammenti scritti in vista di un'apologia del cristianesimo che non giunse a comporre. Alcuni sono paragrafi compiuti, altri tre parole; li lasciò legati in fasci che danno indizi dell'ordine previsto. Tutto ciò che leggiamo è dunque un ordinamento fatto da editori, e ogni edizione ordina diversamente — perciò i numeri dei frammenti non concordano fra loro e bisogna sempre dire quale si usa. Qui sono la scommessa, il cuore che ha ragioni che la ragione non conosce, l'uomo come canna pensante, e il silenzio eterno degli spazi infiniti. AVVISO: il catalogo contiene DUE traduzioni inglesi di quest'opera medesima, «Pascal's Pensées» e «The Thoughts of Blaise Pascal». Non è un errore — sono edizioni diverse — ma conviene saperlo: uno stesso frammento vi compare due volte, con parole e numerazione differenti.
