Contesto e storia
Cicerone le scrisse nel 45 a.C., l'anno in cui gli morì la figlia Tullia. Non è un contorno biografico: il libro chiede se la filosofia serva a qualcosa quando la disgrazia è già avvenuta, e lo chiede uno che lo stava sperimentando. Raccoglie argomenti stoici, epicurei e accademici senza essere di scuola, ed è una delle vie per cui la filosofia greca giunse in Occidente in latino, col lessico che Cicerone dovette inventare per tradurla.
