Contesto e storia
La tesi centrale è breve e si è rivelata straordinariamente feconda: ogni fenomeno mentale è «di qualcosa». Non c'è un vedere che non veda nulla, né un desiderare senza desiderato; l'oggetto vi è contenuto in un modo che Brentano diceva intenzionale, e che non richiede che esso esista realmente — si può temere una cosa che non c'è. Nessun fenomeno fisico ha questo, e perciò il carattere serve a distinguere i due ambiti. Brentano voleva una psicologia empirica ma non sperimentale nel senso del laboratorio, fatta della descrizione accurata di ciò che si dà. Husserl fu suo allievo e di lì uscì la fenomenologia; vi passarono anche Meinong, Twardowski e, per un tempo, Freud.
