L'apologia del cristianesimo che Grozio scrisse in carcere, dapprima in versi olandesi per i marinai del suo paese, poi rifusa in latino.
Contesto e storia
Il titolo latino è «De veritate religionis Christianae», del 1627. L'intenzione originaria era pratica: dare ai marinai olandesi argomenti per parlare con musulmani e pagani nei luoghi dove commerciavano. Di qui il tono, non scolastico ma netto e ordinato, e il metodo, che non parte dall'autorità della Chiesa ma da ciò che un interlocutore che non la riconosca potrebbe concedere. Fu per due secoli l'opera di apologetica più tradotta d'Europa — ve ne sono versioni araba, persiana, cinese — proprio perché era pensata per chi non condivideva la premessa. Grozio è più noto per «De iure belli ac pacis», e le due opere hanno la stessa abitudine mentale.
