Contesto e storia
Scritto verso il 180. Il greco originale è quasi tutto perduto e l'opera sopravvive soprattutto in un'antica traduzione latina. Ed ecco ciò che la rende insostituibile: fino al 1945 questa era la fonte principale di quanto si sapeva dello gnosticismo, perché i testi gnostici non si erano conservati. Quell'anno emersero i codici di Nag Hammadi e il confronto divenne possibile: Ireneo riassume con discreta fedeltà, ma a parlare è pur sempre un avversario, e conviene ricordarlo a ogni pagina.
