Contesto e storia
L'Acaranga è probabilmente il più antico testo giainista conservato, ed è il libro della condotta: come debba vivere un monaco, come debba camminare per non calpestare alcun essere, come debba chiedere il cibo, come debba parlare. È lì che l'ahimsa cessa d'essere un principio e diventa un modo di muoversi per il mondo, ed è il particolare che colpisce. Il Kalpa Sutra è altra cosa: contiene le vite dei Jina, soprattutto quella di Mahavira, e le regole della stagione delle piogge; è il testo che si legge in pubblico durante la festa di Paryushana. La seconda parte è nel corpus a parte. Conviene ricordare che la traduzione è di Jacobi, del 1884, e che la tradizione giainista ha due rami — Shvetambara e Digambara — che non accettano lo stesso canone.
