Fichte divide la storia umana in cinque età secondo il rapporto con la ragione: la ragione come istinto, l'autorità esterna, la liberazione da ogni autorità — dove colloca il proprio tempo —, la scienza e l'arte di vivere secondo ragione. Chiama la terza «lo stato della peccaminosità compiuta», ed è il nucleo della sua critica: un'età che ha distrutto ogni autorità senza essere ancora giunta ad alcuna conoscenza propria, e che perciò non crede nulla. Sono conferenze pubbliche e si seguono senza aver letto la «Dottrina della scienza», che è di tutt'altra difficoltà. Tre anni dopo sarebbero venuti i «Discorsi alla nazione tedesca», anch'essi nel corpus.
