Contesto e storia
Questo testo rimase perduto per secoli e se ne conosceva solo il nome. Nel 1905 un pandit consegnò un manoscritto su foglie di palma alla biblioteca orientale di Mysore, e R. Shamasastry lo identificò e lo pubblicò: fino ad allora nessuno in epoca moderna l'aveva letto. L'attribuzione a Kautilya, ministro di Chandragupta Maurya, è tradizionale, ma gli specialisti datano il testo così come ci è giunto assai più tardi e lo considerano opera stratificata.
