Conviene sapere come si cita Platone, perché nessuno di questi volumi serve a farlo. Il riferimento universale è la paginazione di Stephanus — il «327a» all'inizio della Repubblica —, che viene dall'edizione greca del 1578 e che ogni edizione seria stampa a margine in qualsiasi lingua. Con quel numero una citazione si verifica in greco, in inglese o in italiano; con volume e pagina no. La partizione in sei tomi è dell'editore ottocentesco.
