La frase richiede una precisazione che il libro fa e che quasi mai le si aggiunge: Proudhon non attacca il possesso — il diritto di usare ciò che si lavora — ma la proprietà intesa come diritto di trarre un reddito da una cosa senza lavorarla: la rendita e l'interesse. È inoltre il primo libro in cui qualcuno si dice anarchico e rivendica la parola. Marx lo elogiò all'uscita e lo attaccò duramente sette anni dopo, in un altro libro che è anch'esso in questo catalogo.
