Contesto e storia
«Human Nature» e «De corpore politico» sono le due metà degli «Elements of Law», che Hobbes fece circolare manoscritti nel 1640 e che furono stampati senza il suo permesso nel 1650. C'è già tutta la struttura: la psicologia meccanica delle passioni, lo stato di natura come guerra di tutti contro tutti, e il patto che istituisce un'autorità indivisibile. È più breve e più nudo del «Leviatano», e proprio per questo una buona porta d'ingresso. «Of Liberty and Necessity» è altra cosa: la sua difesa della compatibilità fra libertà umana e determinismo — è libero chi fa ciò che vuole, anche se ciò che vuole è causato —, formulazione che è durata in tutta la discussione successiva.
