Il secondo volume dell'opera in cui Godwin sostiene che il governo è un male necessario solo finché dura l'ignoranza, e che coercizione, proprietà e perfino la promessa diventano superflue col diffondersi della ragione.
Contesto e storia
Uscito nel 1793, in piena reazione britannica contro la Rivoluzione francese; si dice che Godwin sfuggì al processo perché il libro era troppo caro per raggiungere il pubblico che preoccupava il governo. Un particolare d'edizione conta: pubblicò una seconda edizione nel 1796 e una terza nel 1798, attenuandole via via. Le posizioni più estreme stanno nella prima, e perciò chi lo cita dovrebbe sempre dire quale edizione legge.
