Il suo razionalismo radicale si è temperato: il Godwin del 1793 sosteneva che la ragione dovesse bastare a tutto, e questo concede assai più al sentimento, all'abitudine e al caso. Conviene leggerlo dopo la «Giustizia politica», per vedere che cosa fece il tempo a una delle intelligenze più conseguenti del suo secolo.
