Contesto e storia
Conviene dire subito che non è storia. Senofonte prende un personaggio reale — il fondatore dell'impero persiano — e ne inventa la vita per esporre che cosa dovrebbe essere un governante: come s'insegna a comandare, come si guadagna la fedeltà invece d'imporla, come si ordina un esercito, come si tratta un nemico vinto. Erodoto racconta un Ciro affatto diverso. Il libro fu letto moltissimo nell'antichità e nel Rinascimento: Scipione e Cesare lo portavano con sé, Machiavelli lo cita, e Jefferson ne possedeva due copie. Conviene leggerlo sapendo che ciò che vi sta è l'idea che Senofonte si faceva del potere ben esercitato, non ciò che accadde in Persia.

It seems that Dakyns died before Cyropaedia could be included as the planned fourth and final volume of his series, "The Works of Xenophon," published in the 1890s by Macmillan and Co. The works in that series can all be found in Project Gutenberg under their individual titles.
