Контекст и история
Начинается страницей, не похожей ни на что другое у Спинозы: признанием от первого лица в том, что богатство, почёт и наслаждение не дают ничего прочного и что он решился искать благо, которое даёт. Дальнейшего довольно, чтобы увидеть метод: различить способы, какими мы познаём, — понаслышке, из смутного опыта, через рассуждение и, четвёртый, восприятие вещи из её сущности — и показать, что годится лишь последний. Трактат остался незаконченным; Спиноза бросил его, чтобы писать «Этику», которая метод применяет, а не излагает. Оттого он и есть лучший вход: видно, чего он искал, прежде чем геометрия всё собою закрыла.
