Контекст и история
Цицерон написал их в 45 г. до н. э., в год смерти дочери Туллии. Это не биографическая подробность: книга спрашивает, годна ли философия на что-нибудь, когда несчастье уже случилось, и спрашивает человек, который это как раз проверяет. Она собирает доводы стоиков, эпикурейцев и академиков, не принадлежа ни к одной школе, и служит одним из путей, которыми греческая философия пришла на Запад по-латыни — в том словаре, который Цицерону пришлось изобрести, чтобы её перевести.
