Контекст и история
Этот текст был утрачен более чем на тысячу лет. В 1819 году Анджело Маи нашёл его в ватиканском палимпсесте — под толкованием Августина на псалмы: Цицерона выскоблили, чтобы пустить пергамен в дело вторично. Вернулся он крайне неполным, и лакуны заметны. Исключение — концовка, «Сон Сципиона», уцелевшая отдельно, потому что её прокомментировал Макробий; её и читали всё Средневековье, когда остальной книги не существовало.
