Как и все гегелевские курсы, этот текст написан не им: издатели составили его после смерти автора из его заметок и студенческих тетрадей разных лет. Схема, которую цитируют, — символическое, классическое и романтическое искусство, путь от архитектуры к поэзии — принадлежит ему, а вот конкретные формулировки часто нет. Самый спорный тезис, о конце искусства, не утверждает, что искусство кончается: он утверждает, что искусство перестало быть высшим способом, каким эпоха говорит себе истину.
