背景与流传
此书源出他任教廷使节驻君士坦丁堡期间（约五七九至五八五年）对修士们所作的讲论，其后又经他修订。第三重读法即道德的读法影响最为深远：中世纪谈论恶德与美德所用的许多语汇皆出于此。这是一部长篇著作，本意是供人反复翻检，而非一气读完。
