Context i història
El text es va formar al període dels Regnes Combatents xinesos (segles V-III aC), quan la guerra va deixar de ser cosa de nobles i va passar a ser un afer d'estats sencers. L'atribució a un general anomenat Sun Wu és tradicional i discutida. Aquesta versió és la traducció anglesa de Lionel Giles del 1910, la que va fer conegut el llibre fora de la Xina.
