Der zweite Teil des Awesta in den „Sacred Books of the East“: die Yashts, die Sirozahs und die Nyayishes, also die Hymnen an die Gottheiten und die täglichen Gebete.
Kontext und Geschichte
Die Yashts sind der dichterischste Teil des Awesta und zugleich derjenige, der am meisten vorzarathustrisches Gut bewahrt: es sind Hymnen an göttliche Gestalten — Mithra, Anahita, Verethragna, die Fravashis —, die der Zoroastrismus aufnahm, statt sie zu tilgen, und die daher zweifachen Wert haben, religiös und mythologisch. Besonders der Mithra-Yasht ist eine Hauptquelle über einen Gott, der zuletzt im ganzen römischen Reich seinen eigenen Kult hatte. Die Nyayishes sind Gebete an Sonne, Mond, Wasser und Feuer; die Sirozahs Anrufungen für die dreißig Tage des Monats. Der religiöse Kern des Awesta — die Gathas Zarathustras — steht im dritten Teil.
