Die fünf kleinen Abhandlungen, in denen Boethius die logische Methode des Aristoteles auf die christlichen Lehrsätze anwendet, in der zweisprachigen lateinisch-englischen Loeb-Ausgabe.
Kontext und Geschichte
Sie sind sehr kurz und sehr dicht. Am wirksamsten ist die dritte, „De hebdomadibus“, die fragt, wie Dinge dadurch gut sein können, dass sie sind: dort erscheint die Unterscheidung zwischen dem esse und dem, was ein Ding ist — entscheidend für Thomas von Aquin, der diesen Text kommentiert hat. Die letzte, „Gegen Eutyches und Nestorius“, enthält die Bestimmung der Person — „individuelle Substanz von vernünftiger Natur“ —, die tausend Jahre theologischer und philosophischer Erörterung darüber ordnete, was eine Person sei. Boethius schrieb diese Traktate vor seinem Sturz; die „Trost der Philosophie“, ebenfalls im Korpus, schrieb er im Kerker in Erwartung der Hinrichtung, und bemerkenswerterweise erwähnt er darin das Christentum nicht.
