Cicero schrieb sie 45 v. Chr., im Todesjahr seiner Tochter Tullia. Das ist keine biographische Zutat: Das Buch fragt, ob Philosophie noch etwas nützt, wenn das Unglück bereits eingetreten ist — und es fragt einer, der es gerade erprobt. Es sammelt stoische, epikureische und akademische Argumente, ohne einer Schule anzugehören, und ist einer der Wege, auf denen griechische Philosophie lateinisch in den Westen kam, in dem Wortschatz, den Cicero zum Übersetzen erst erfinden musste.
