Das Buch von 1874, das die Frage neu stellte, was das Seelische vom Körperlichen unterscheidet, und das der späteren Philosophie den Begriff der Intentionalität gab.
Kontext und Geschichte
Die Hauptthese ist kurz und hat sich als außerordentlich fruchtbar erwiesen: jedes psychische Phänomen ist „von etwas“. Es gibt kein Sehen, das nichts sieht, kein Begehren ohne Begehrtes; der Gegenstand ist auf eine Weise darin enthalten, die Brentano intentional nannte und die nicht verlangt, dass er wirklich sei — man kann etwas fürchten, das nicht da ist. Kein physisches Phänomen hat dies, und darum dient das Merkmal zur Unterscheidung der beiden Gebiete. Brentano wollte eine empirische, aber nicht im Laborsinn experimentelle Psychologie, gebildet aus der sorgfältigen Beschreibung des Gegebenen. Husserl war sein Schüler, und daraus ging die Phänomenologie hervor; auch Meinong, Twardowski und eine Zeitlang Freud gingen dort durch.
