Kontext und Geschichte

Ein Jude, ein Muslim und ein Christ im Jerusalem der Kreuzzüge. Der Sultan fragt Nathan, welche Religion die wahre sei, und Nathan antwortet mit der Geschichte eines Vaters, der seinen drei Söhnen drei gleiche Ringe hinterließ. Lessing schrieb es, als man ihm verbot, in Prosa weiter über Theologie zu streiten.
