Der erste Band von Harriet Martineaus Untersuchung der Vereinigten Staaten, 1837, worin sie das, was das Land von sich sagte, dem gegenüberstellt, was sie dort fand.
Kontext und Geschichte
Martineau bereiste die Vereinigten Staaten zwischen 1834 und 1836 und veröffentlichte dies 1837. Bemerkenswert ist nicht der Reisebericht, sondern das Verfahren: sie ging mit einem vorher erklärten Maßstab — zu vergleichen, was das Land in seinen Gründungsurkunden von sich sagte, mit dem, was sie dort sähe — und mit Regeln des Beobachtens, die sie gesondert herausgab. Darum zählt sie zu den Begründern der Soziologie, und oft wird sie nicht dazu gezählt. Ihr Schluss ist hart: die Republik, die sich auf die Gleichheit gegründet nennt, hält Sklaven und lässt die Frauen ohne Rechte, und beides ist von einerlei Art. Sie schrieb es, als es sie in den Südstaaten die Sicherheit kosten konnte, und es kostete sie diese. Seit ihrer Jugend taub, verdiente sie ihr Brot ihr ganzes erwachsenes Leben mit der Feder.

Few individuals of this majority can act for longer than two-score years and ten; few for so long. No one can suppose that his successor will think or feel as he does, however strict may be the regard of each to the fundamental principles which are to regulate his citizenship. It is absolutely necessary, to secure permanence to the recognition of those principles, that there should be liberty to change the form which contains them. Else, in the endless variety of human views and interests, there is danger lest men, being prohibited from producing a correspondence between the principles they recognise, and the forms they desire, should, because interdicted from outward change, gradually alter the spirit of their government.
