Kontext und Geschichte
Der französische Titel lautet „Matière et mémoire“. Der Kunstgriff ist klug: statt im Abstrakten darüber zu streiten, ob der Geist materiell sei, nimmt Bergson jene Erscheinung, an der sich das Problem mit dem Finger berühren lässt, und unterscheidet zwei Gedächtnisse, die man gewöhnlich vermengt. Das eine ist die Gewohnheit — eine Lektion auswendig können, was eine Anlage des Leibes ist —; das andere die Erinnerung an einen einmaligen, datierten Augenblick, die im Gehirn nicht wie eine Akte abgelegt wird. Daher seine These, das Gehirn enthalte die Erinnerungen nicht, sondern wähle sie für das gegenwärtige Handeln aus. Das Bild des umgekehrten Kegels, in dem sich die ganze Vergangenheit auf die Spitze der Gegenwart zusammenzieht, gehört zu den meistzitierten der neueren Philosophie.
