Die Verteidigung des Christentums, die Grotius im Gefängnis schrieb, zuerst in niederländischen Versen für die Seeleute seines Landes, dann lateinisch umgearbeitet.
Kontext und Geschichte
Der lateinische Titel lautet „De veritate religionis Christianae“, 1627. Die ursprüngliche Absicht war praktisch: den holländischen Seeleuten Gründe an die Hand zu geben, um an ihren Handelsplätzen mit Muslimen und Heiden zu sprechen. Daher der Ton, der nicht scholastisch, sondern klar und geordnet ist, und das Verfahren, das nicht von der Autorität der Kirche ausgeht, sondern von dem, was ein Gesprächspartner, der sie nicht anerkennt, zugestehen könnte. Zwei Jahrhunderte lang war es die meistübersetzte apologetische Schrift Europas — es gibt arabische, persische, chinesische Fassungen — eben weil sie für die gedacht war, die die Voraussetzung nicht teilten. Bekannter ist Grotius durch „De iure belli ac pacis“; beide Werke haben dieselbe Denkart.
