Kontext und Geschichte
Bentham wandte hier dasselbe Verfahren an wie in seinen juristischen Schriften: den Text genau lesen, Aussagen vergleichen, Widersprüche aufsuchen. Er zeigt, dass die drei Berichte von der Bekehrung des Paulus in der Apostelgeschichte nicht übereinstimmen, dass Paulus Jesus nicht gekannt hat und dass die von ihm eingeführte asketische Moral — zumal in geschlechtlichen Dingen — in den Evangelien keinen Grund hat. Der Deckname war keine Laune: dies im England von 1823 unter eigenem Namen zu veröffentlichen, war ein wirkliches Wagnis, und das Buch wurde übergangen oder angegriffen. Einen noch deutlicheren dritten Teil ließ er ungedruckt. Man lese es im Wissen, dass es eine Streitschrift ist und dass die Bibelwissenschaft des 20. Jahrhunderts viele dieser Fragen mit anderen Mitteln neu bearbeitet hat.
