Kontext und Geschichte
1695 ungezeichnet erschienen, und das mit Grund: Das Ergebnis lautet, wesentlich sei zu glauben, dass Jesus der Messias ist, und sein Leben zu bessern; alles Übrige sei Zutat. Das trug ihm sogleich den Vorwurf des Sozinianismus ein — also der Leugnung der Dreieinigkeit — und einen jahrelangen Streit. Zu Lebzeiten hat Locke das Buch nie als seines anerkannt. Es gehört ebenso zur Toleranzdebatte wie zur Theologie: Ist das Mindestmaß des zu Glaubenden klein, so ist es auch das, was sich von Gesetzes wegen fordern lässt.
