Kontext und Geschichte
Dieser Text war jahrhundertelang verschollen und nur dem Namen nach bekannt. 1905 übergab ein Pandit eine Palmblatthandschrift der Orientalischen Bibliothek in Mysore, und R. Shamasastry erkannte und edierte sie: bis dahin hatte ihn in der Neuzeit niemand gelesen. Die Zuschreibung an Kautilya, den Minister Chandraguptas, ist überliefert; die Fachleute datieren den Text in der uns vorliegenden Gestalt jedoch erheblich später und halten ihn für ein gewachsenes Werk.
