Plutarch stellt einen Griechen neben einen Römer — Alexander und Caesar, Demosthenes und Cicero — und vergleicht sie am Ende jedes Paares. Er schreibt keine Geschichte, sondern **Charakter**: er sagt geradeheraus, dass eine kleine Anekdote den Mann besser zeigt als eine Schlacht. Die Hälfte von Shakespeares Römerdramen kommt von hier, und ein guter Teil dessen, was das Abendland über die Antike zu wissen glaubt.
