Kontext und Geschichte
Der Untertitel lautet „Philosophie des Elends“. Die Beweisführung verläuft als Reihe: die Arbeitsteilung vervielfacht die Erzeugung und verkümmert zugleich den Arbeiter; die Maschinen nehmen Mühe ab und setzen zugleich Menschen brot los; der Wettbewerb verbilligt und richtet zugleich zugrunde. Proudhon schließt daraus nicht, dies sei abzuschaffen, sondern man müsse für jedes Paar das Gleichgewicht finden — und eben das ist die Stellung, die Marx im folgenden Jahr im „Elend der Philosophie“ angriff, indem er den Titel umkehrte. Es lohnt, beide Bücher nacheinander zu lesen; beide sind im Korpus. Es ist der erste große innere Streit des Sozialismus, und worum es geht — ob Widersprüche gelöst oder ausgeglichen werden — wird noch immer verhandelt.
