Diltheys Versuch, die Geisteswissenschaften — Geschichte, Recht, Literatur, Religion — auf eine eigene Methode zu gründen, statt die der Naturwissenschaften nachzuahmen.

Kontext und Geschichte

1883 erschienen. Die daraus hervorgehende Unterscheidung ist die dauerhafte geblieben: Die Naturwissenschaften erklären, die Geisteswissenschaften verstehen; die einen suchen Ursachen, die anderen Sinn, und ihre Vermengung wollte Dilthey verhindern. Eines sollte man wissen: Dieser Band ist der erste eines Werkes, das mehrere haben sollte, und der zweite kam nie. Man liest also eine Problemstellung ohne den Aufbau, der ihr folgen sollte.
