El tratado de Aristóteles sobre el alma, que no es un espíritu encerrado en un cuerpo sino aquello que hace que un cuerpo vivo esté vivo.
Contexto e historia
La definición del libro segundo —el alma es el acto primero de un cuerpo natural que tiene la vida en potencia— deshace de un golpe el problema platónico de cómo se juntan dos sustancias distintas: no se juntan, porque no son dos, igual que la forma de un hacha no es algo separado del hierro. De ahí sale una escala: las plantas se nutren y se reproducen, los animales además sienten y se mueven, el hombre además piensa. El libro tercero contiene el pasaje sobre el entendimiento agente que ocupó mil quinientos años de comentarios, porque Aristóteles dice allí que esa parte es «separable, impasible y sin mezcla» y no aclara si es personal o común: Averroes leyó una cosa y Tomás otra, y la disputa llegó hasta el Renacimiento. Es también el primer tratado de psicología y de teoría de la percepción que conservamos.
