No es un libro único sino un conjunto de tratados reunidos, y se nota: hay repeticiones y comienzos distintos. El núcleo es la pregunta por lo que Aristóteles llama «el ser en cuanto ser» —no esta cosa o aquella, sino qué significa decir de cualquier cosa que es—, y la respuesta pasa por la sustancia, por la distinción entre potencia y acto, y por la crítica de las ideas de Platón, su maestro. El libro XII contiene el motor inmóvil, que la teología medieval identificaría con Dios. El libro I empieza con la frase «todos los hombres desean por naturaleza saber», y el II contiene el primer repaso histórico de la filosofía que se ha conservado.
