De qué trata
La primera parte del Avesta en los «Sacred Books of the East»: el Vendidad, el código de pureza y de purificación del zoroastrismo.
Contexto e historia
Es la parte del Avesta que menos se parece a un libro religioso tal como se lo imagina un lector moderno, y conviene decirlo. El Vendidad —«ley contra los demonios»— es sobre todo un tratado legal y ritual: qué contactos contaminan, cómo debe tratarse un cadáver, qué penas corresponden a cada falta, cómo se purifican la tierra, el agua y el fuego, cómo debe cuidarse un perro. Su interés es doble: es un documento jurídico y social del Irán antiguo de un detalle extraordinario, y explica prácticas zoroástricas que todavía existen. El núcleo antiguo y religiosamente central del Avesta son las Gathas, que están en la tercera parte. La traducción es de Darmesteter, de 1880.
