Cicerón las escribió en el 45 a. C., el año en que se le murió su hija Tulia. No es una anécdota biográfica: el libro pregunta si la filosofía sirve de algo cuando la desgracia ya ha llegado, y lo pregunta alguien que lo estaba probando. Recoge argumentos estoicos, epicúreos y académicos sin ser de escuela, y es una de las vías por las que la filosofía griega llegó a Occidente en latín, con el vocabulario que Cicerón tuvo que inventar para traducirla.
Contexto editorial, no una fuente citable: a diferencia de los pasajes de la obra, estos datos no se pueden comprobar contra el corpus.
