Contexto e historia
Este texto estuvo perdido más de mil años. En 1819 Angelo Mai lo encontró en un palimpsesto del Vaticano, escrito debajo de un comentario de Agustín a los salmos: rasparon a Cicerón para reaprovechar el pergamino. Se recuperó muy incompleto, y se notan los huecos. La excepción es el final, el Sueño de Escipión, que se había conservado por su cuenta porque Macrobio lo había comentado, y que por eso se leyó durante toda la Edad Media cuando el resto del libro no existía.
Contexto editorial, no una fuente citable: a diferencia de los pasajes de la obra, estos datos no se pueden comprobar contra el corpus.

Featherstonhaugh, Esq., Fellow of the Geological Society of London; of the American Philosophical Society; of the Lyceum of Natural History of New-York, &c. &c. &c.” In conformity to the Act of Congress of the United States, entitled, “An Act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned;” and also, to an Act, entitled, “An Act, supplementary to an Act, entitled an Act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned, and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other prints.” FRED.
