Contexto e historia
«Minute philosopher» es una pulla: los que empequeñecen las cosas grandes. Los interlocutores, Alcifrón y Lisicles, sostienen las posiciones de Shaftesbury y de Mandeville, y Berkeley las responde una por una. El diálogo cuarto contiene su argumento más conocido, el del lenguaje visual: ver es interpretar unos signos que no se parecen a lo que significan, como las palabras, y por tanto la naturaleza entera es un discurso. El séptimo es una teoría del significado que se adelanta mucho al siglo XX: hay palabras que no funcionan evocando ideas sino regulando conducta. Se escribió en Rhode Island, mientras esperaba un dinero que nunca llegó para fundar una universidad en las Bermudas.

The Minute Philofopher coniifls of a feries of dialogues, involving moil of the important topics in the debate between Chriftians and Infidels ; the principal arguments by which Chriftianity is defended, and the principal objections with which it has been oppoi'ed. The reafoning is clear, found, and conclufive ; and has never been anfwered. The characters of the difputants are well chofen, and ably fupported ; and their converfation is fpirited and natural.
