Contexto e historia
Tiene una historia textual que vale la pena saber. Lo escribió hacia 1604-1606, muy joven, por encargo de la Compañía Holandesa de las Indias Orientales, que había capturado un barco portugués y necesitaba justificarlo. No lo publicó nunca: solo sacó un capítulo, en 1609 y sin firmar, que es el Mare Liberum sobre la libertad de los mares. El resto quedó entre sus papeles y no se conoció hasta que el manuscrito apareció en una subasta en 1864. Esta edición latina es de poco después.
