De qué trata
La apología del cristianismo que Grocio escribió en la cárcel, primero en verso holandés para los marineros de su país, y luego rehecha en latín.
Contexto e historia
El título latino es «De veritate religionis Christianae», de 1627. La intención original era práctica: dar a los marineros holandeses argumentos para hablar con musulmanes y con paganos en los lugares donde comerciaban. De ahí el tono, que no es escolástico sino limpio y ordenado, y el método, que no parte de la autoridad de la Iglesia sino de lo que un interlocutor que no la reconozca podría admitir. Fue el manual de apologética más traducido de Europa durante dos siglos —hay versiones al árabe, al persa, al chino— precisamente porque estaba pensado para quien no compartía la premisa. Grocio es más conocido por «De iure belli ac pacis», y las dos obras tienen el mismo hábito mental.
