Un zapatero sin estudios de Görlitz escribe, a partir de una experiencia que tuvo mirando un reflejo en una escudilla de peltre, una mística en la que Dios contiene a la vez la oscuridad y la luz. Esta recopilación es la parte más accesible de su obra. Hegel lo llamó «el primer filósofo alemán»; los luteranos ortodoxos lo prohibieron.
